Sports in Space and Unfair Advantages in the 2404 Galactic Olympic Games

It should be noted that Earth is a most excellent platform, domicile, habitat, and biosphere for humankind. Indeed, this species has done well in its evolutionary process to make the most of what is available, and developed a large brain to modify it further to fit its needs. Humans have also developed sports to exercise those genes, even if many are not needed due to the conquering of nature, weather, and other hungry species herein.
Okay so, let’s talk about what happens when humans go off-world, and the future of sports in space – namely the future of the Olympic Galactic Games.
Interestingly enough, I was out in Los Angeles over the Thanksgiving Holiday and the big cross-town rivalry College Football Game was on; USC Versus UCLA. Well, it wasn’t really a “game” as it was more like a slaughter with USC scoring 50 points and UCLA “zero” and two-days later the head coach of UCLA football got fired, which I suppose is quite understandable. Nevertheless, this unbalanced football game made me ponder the future of sports, and let me explain why.
You see, in college I was an athlete, a runner, and when track stars came out from Denver, training at a mile-high they certainly had the advantage competing with us out here in California at sea level, plus or minus, 50 meters. These runners were, due to their training at altitude, much better conditioned runners, and very hard to beat. Thus, what I am saying is that there are incredible advantages based on the training environment.
Therefore, those who train in off-world planets in harsh conditions, more gravity, different atmosphere, or under strenuous conditions will be hard to beat in Earth’s climate and conditions, the conditions which humans were originally evolved from. Further, over many generations, perhaps 10 or more those in the harder to deal with environments will become superior and adapted for them, which would make competing on Earth a piece of cake.
Today, the world soccer federation does not allow soccer games at the top of Bolivia’s La Paz capital because athletes cannot handle it, get fatigued, winded, and unable to compete, some even pass out. Remember there is less oxygen at altitude, and it gets cold up there, those two things combined are pure hell on human muscles that are not conditioned for that. In this case the Bolivian soccer players have a great advantage, almost as Llamas do in the higher altitudes than any of their other distant-cousin species.
The future of human evolution once diversified will bring with it different skill levels due to different environments, and thus, we should expect this to be in the future development of mankind’s sports. Please consider all this and think on it.…

Parents Worry About Their Child Being Bullied

Parents Worry About Their Child Being Bullied

I think that all parents worry about their child being bullied. When you let your child go off to school at the age of 4 or 5 you are no longer there to protect them. The child has to make his/her own way in the world.

One of the questions that I raised at the initial parent teacher meeting at my daughter’s school was “is there adequate supervision in the playground?” The answer was that there would be a teacher and one or two classroom assistants in place to watch what was going on.

My daughter also told me when she was in Junior Infants that she wasn’t allowed to play with the kids in Senior Infants (one year older). I thought that was a bit strange so I asked the teacher about it and she explained that it is better if the kids play with their own age group. I suppose there is less likelihood that the bigger kids will pick on the younger ones.

Despite this there have been mornings when I am brushing my daughter’s hair that she becomes a bit tearful. She might say “one of the boys hit me, or they took my ball without asking and they wouldn’t give it back, or the girls won’t play with me. I admit that I do find this a bit challenging sometimes when I am rushing to get out the door. But it is great that she is telling me these things because then I try and reassure her. I don’t think that these isolated incidents amount to bullying because kids will be kids and my daughter needs to learn that people don’t always get along, there will be minor disagreements.

One way is to try and teach the child to stand up for herself. This is not easy because little kids just want everyone to like them and they get upset if they think that another kid is being mean to them. This is why I think it is very important to make the time to listen to what your child is trying to tell you. I personally think that the best defence against bullying is to raise your child to believe that she is loved and secure.

Of course, my kids are still very young and by all accounts teenagers can be rather vicious towards each other and that is a different kettle of fish altogether. The recent case of Phoebe Prince is very shocking. We will probably never know all the facts. The court case is ongoing, it will never bring her back but perhaps lessons can be learned from its outcome.…

Safety Tips to Avoid Playground Injuries

Safety Tips to Avoid Playground Injuries

The children are always prone to injuries while playing with playground equipment. Poor quality equipment and lack of adult supervision are responsible for most of the injuries along with other factors. By teaching the children right playing behaviour and following certain safety rules, the playing experience of the children can be made more wonderful.

Playground equipment always makes children happy. Outdoor play is also better for health and fitness. But for the sake of happiness and fitness, safety of children should not be compromised. The playground related injuries are increasing year by year. To keep a control over these injuries few safety rules should be followed strictly.

Some of the safety points to avoid playground related injuries are as follows:

* The children should be supervised while playing with playground equipment. The area or park where the children go for playing should be open enough so that they can be viewed easily by adults. Adult supervision is necessary to avoid any accident. An elder person can do basic first aid and arrange help in the event of an accident.

* The presence of an elder member of a family can make the children behave in a responsible way. When a number of children use the same equipment, some of them can indulge in harming other children. The children must be taught responsible play behavior to enhance their playtime experience.

* While purchasing playground equipment, it is wise to check that the manufacturer has followed the standard safety guidelines or not. Reputed equipment manufacturers or suppliers usually follow all the safety guidelines set by concerned authority. As such their playground designs are safe and the equipment is made up of quality material. To play safe, the installation of playground equipment should be conducted by professionals. The after sales service of reputed dealers is also good.

* The playground equipment should be regularly inspected in order to detect any wear and tear in the structure. Proper maintenance is also necessary to keep the children away from any injury and risk. This is very essential with respect to the equipment placed in the backyard areas, school playground, public parks, etc.

* Ground covering also plays an important role in making the playground safe for children. Concrete and asphalt coverings should be avoided as they are hazardous. Grass and packed earth are also said to be dangerous. Only soft unitary and loose-fill materials are considered safe for ground covering. Loose fill materials like mulch and sand also work well on playgrounds.

By following few rules the risks associated with commercial playground equipment can be reduced to a great extent. This will always keep the fun and enjoyment for children intact.…

Put a Little Tikes Playground in Your Yard and Watch Your Child’s Imagination Come to Life

Put a Little Tikes Playground in Your Yard and Watch Your Child’s Imagination Come to Life

If you put a Little Tikes playground in your yard your child’s imagination will come to life. There are a couple of different playgrounds available, some of them have swings and some include climbing walls, while others have slides. Whatever playground you can get, you can sure that your child will always have something to do.

We have the adventure playground in our yard and our son has the best times out there with his friends. We will see them climbing the ropes, while some kids are swinging or going down the slide. They all use the fort that is on the top of the sliding board to hide or as a lookout for bad guys.

When it gets hot outside we take the toys out of the storage area and fill it up with water so there is a place they can get wet. They love everything about the Little Tikes playground. We have it by his cottage playhouse. When the kids are done having their drinks and snacks in the house, they can come right back outside and jump in the water.

Under the fort and the slide, there is a covered sandbox. When our son decided that he wanted to go digging for dinosaur bones we took the ones that were on the Halloween skeleton and buried them in the sandbox. He was thrilled when he started digging and actually came up with a bone in his own sandbox. Now he and his friends dress up like archeologists and spend hours digging for bones. Pretending when you are four years old is great, and having a Little Tikes playground certainly gives them plenty of opportunities to do this.

The ideas that the children come up with are amazing. Some days they pretend to be pirates looking for buried treasure, one of the boys will climb to the top of the ropes and play lookout. What they don’t know is that I go outside before they come over and bury pennies for them to find. When they find the buried treasure they have a great time sharing it.

When some of the older kids come over, I don’t worry about them using the Little Tikes playground because it is strong enough to hold 9 and 10 year old children. It is great to see them all playing together. The older kids even do some digging and swinging.

My sons’ friend has one of other Little Tikes playground sets. This one has two climbing places, two slides and a tunnel. The tunnel seems to be their favorite place. They love crawling through to catch each other or to see who can go faster. They also pretend to be working underground where they have to make their way through different obstacles to save someone who is trapped at the other end.

I find it fascinating to see what the children can do when they use their imagination. They have hours of adventures each day they play on their Little Tikes playground and every one of them will be remembered forever.…

How to Make Cubby Houses

How to Make Cubby Houses

Do you remember the cubby house you used to have as a kid? The one where you used to have a secret knock and a secret password, just to get inside the front door? It became a Pirate ship sailing the Seven Seas, or a submarine, exploring places you could not even pronounce because they were imaginary! It was a truck and a sports car, a bus and an aeroplane. There was nothing that darn cubby house could not be.

There are three basic styles of cubby houses:

1. The fort – these are open plan cubby houses, and often make sure of accessories such as slides, nets, and sandpits.

2. Traditional – these are the cubby houses that look like a miniature house. They come with windows, doors, and even verandas, depending on the model.

3. Play centres – these are semi-enclosed. Think one full wall and one half-height wall. They also come with great accessories such as sandpits, slides, nets, and other things to make play even more fun.

When you choose a cubby for your kids, take their age and development level into consideration. Of course, make sure you have enough room in your yard for the cubby that you are thinking about.

Building and Construction students from Macintyre High School have returned to their younger years and designed and built two magnificent cubby houses using funding and support from the Northern Tablelands Industry and Education Partnership’s Adopt a School program.

Industrial Arts teacher Nick McLoughlin said the program was designed to forge links between school and industry and has helped the students develop skills they will use for life.…
